Duke of York's Picturehouse (Brighton)

Are you curious about the history of cinema and its cultural significance? The Duke of York's Picturehouse in Brighton is offering guided morning tours, which will take you through the beautiful Grade II-listed building, including the projection booth. You'll hear about the cinema's earliest days as a grand Edwardian-picture palace, its transformation over the years, and the personal stories of the characters who shaped its legacy.

The Duke of York's Picturehouse has a rich history, dating back to 22 September 1910, when it was built by actress-manager Violet Melnotte-Wyatt on the site of the Amber Ale Brewery. Over the years, it has passed from an Edwardian picture palace to a 'fleapit' and eventually became an arts cinema in 1981. In 1994, Picturehouse bought the building and invested in its restoration.

The guided tours, which run from Sunday, 8 November 2026, to Sunday, 6 December 2026, at the Duke of York's Picturehouse in Brighton, will give you a unique insight into the cinema's history and operation. With only 16 places available on each tour, pre-booking is essential. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
