Tours of the Duke of York's

The nation's oldest surviving cinema, a beloved part of Brighton's heritage, and a beacon for film fans everywhere - enjoy a guided morning tour of the historic Duke of York’s Picturehouse and learn about over 115 years of history. Whilst being shown all around the beautiful Grade II-listed building (including behind-the-scenes in the projection booth), you'll hear about the cinema's earliest days as a grand Edwardian-picture palace, the changing culture of cinema-going and the movies, just how the Duke's survived all this time, as well as the remarkable personal stories of the characters who left such a legacy on this iconic Brighton landmark. Attendees receive a free souvenir Duke of York’s postcard! The tour meeting point is outside the front of the cinema. The doors will be open 10 minutes before the start time for attendees to use the facilities if needed. The tour will be around 1 hour and 45 minutes. There will be an opportunity to sit down around halfway through whilst we visit the auditorium. The first part of the tour takes place outside in front of the cinema and will also involve walking down the side of the building. Audience questions are encouraged and taking photos is allowed in most areas. Due to the nature of the building, some areas of the tour (such as the projection booth) are only accessible by staircase, and some may find some steps steep. Spaces on each tour will be limited to 16 people. Pre-booking is essential. School bookings are also available - please enquire.
