The 1957 album, The Stylings Of Silver, is a seminal work in the hard bop genre, featuring Horace Silver's swinging quintet with Art Farmer on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. This six-song set introduced several of Silver's enduring originals, including "No Smokin'," "Soulville," and "Home Cookin'."

Horace Silver was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1928 to a Cape Verdean father and an American mother. He began playing piano in childhood and later co-founded the Jazz Messengers with Art Blakey before forming his own quintet in 1956. Silver's quintet became the standard small-group line-up for his work, recording frequently for Blue Note Records.

Silver's music is characterized by his unique blend of hard bop and jazz standards, with compositions like "Doodlin'" and "Peace" becoming widely played. The Stylings Of Silver, in particular, is notable for its enjoyable performances, including a version of the standard "My One and Only Love." On Thursday, 12 November 2026, at Resident Music in Brighton, fans can experience this iconic album in a special event. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
