Thelonious Monk's music is characterised by its dissonances and angular melodies, a highly percussive attack, and abrupt key releases, which has had a profound influence on the development of bebop and modern jazz. Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, in 1917, Monk grew up in Manhattan and began playing piano at the age of nine, before forming his first band at 16 and becoming a regular performer at Minton's Playhouse in the 1940s.

Monk's Dream, his first album on Columbia Records, was released in 1963 and features a quartet including Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The album was a critical and commercial success, and remains one of Monk's finest achievements. With its unique blend of cohesion and experimentation, Monk's Dream continues to be celebrated as a landmark of modern jazz.

The event, taking place on Friday, 6 November 2026, at Resident Music in Brighton, will celebrate the reissue of Monk's Dream, with a Waxtime crystal clear LP reissue available. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
