De La Warr Pavilion (Bexhill-on-Sea)

Tschabalala Self's bronze sculpture, Seated, is a striking representation of a strong and self-possessed Black woman, symbolising the importance of taking up space. The sculpture will be on display on the lawn of the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea from Wednesday, 28 October 2026, until Thursday, 1 April 2027.

Tschabalala Self is an American artist known for her figurative work, which often combines painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage. Her art typically features Black female figures, created using a range of materials, including paint, fabric, and discarded pieces from her previous works. Self has exhibited her work at major museums in Europe, Australia, and the United States, and has received several awards and commissions, including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant.

The sculpture, Seated, is presented on the lawn of the De La Warr Pavilion, facing outwards to the ocean, and is designed to evoke feelings of resting, reflection, and leisure. It is part of the De La Warr Pavilion's outdoor exhibition and is supported by Pilar Corrias Gallery, London. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
