Tschabalala Self: Seated

Tschabalala Self's work brings together painting, printmaking, sculpture and collage, predominantly depicting women and traversing different artistic traditions. Black and femme bodies are particularly prevalent in her work, featuring different subjects or characters with individual and powerful identities. Through meditations on race and gender, Self's work is concerned with what it means to flourish as a human and how the self is performed and perceived within contemporary life. The sculpture 'Seated' is presented on the lawn of the De La Warr Pavilion, facing outwards to the ocean, and will evoke the acts of resting, reflection and leisure that are part of the Pavilion's coastal context. Tschabalala Self lives and works in New York Tri-State and has had recent exhibitions at Kunstmuseum St Gallen, Desert X 2023, Le Consortium, and Performa 2021 Biennial. Her work is held in major museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
