The woodland at Herstmonceux Castle is an ancient Bluebell woodland set within a Historic Parkland. It features enchanting woodland paths, mighty Oaks and veteran Sweet Chestnut trees, providing a relaxing and tranquil environment. The woodland is home to a diverse range of species, including bluebell and wood anemone, fungi, small mammals such as hazel dormice, and larger mammals like badgers and deer. The woodland is managed under the guidance of the UK Woodland Assurance Standard, with small areas of coppice cut to increase the age structure and create a patch-work of successive habitats. This process allows species to thrive and provides essential habitat for birds, bats, invertebrates, and mammals. The resulting timber is used to provide the estate with a source of renewable energy, fencing, plant supports, and traditional coppice products. The woodland also features rare mosses and lichens that cannot be found in any other environment. Visitors can enjoy long walks along the woodland paths and take in the natural beauty of the area.
