The Lower Garden at Herstmonceux Castle is a haven for butterflies, with an increase in sightings of species such as the Peacock and Gatekeeper. The garden provides a food source for caterpillars and nectar for adult butterflies, attracting them to lay their eggs. There are 43 native butterfly species in Sussex, and the garden aims to provide a thriving habitat for these creatures. The garden also supports other wildlife, including insects and birds. However, rabbits can be a problem, and temporary wire fencing is sometimes necessary to protect young plants. Visitors can take a seat and watch the wildlife, and the Buddleia beds are a popular spot for butterflies. The garden is not accessible via wheelchair, but dogs are welcome on leads.
