Are viewers ready for a darker, more imaginative take on the Batman franchise? Batman Returns, directed by Tim Burton, follows the caped crusader as he confronts corrupt businessman Max Shreck and deformed crime boss Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin. The film boasts an all-star cast, including Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danny DeVito, and is known for its sleek and authoritarian production design.

The film has received widespread critical acclaim, with scores of 7.1/10 on IMDb, 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 72% on Trakt. Critics have praised the film's visuals, performances, and dark tone, although some have argued that the emphasis on spectacle sometimes makes it feel cheerless and claustrophobic. Viewers have also praised the film, with many appreciating its campy weirdness, astonishing performances, and more contained superhero story.

Batman Returns will be screened at Folkestone Harbour Arm, Folkestone, on Saturday, 21 November 2026. Tickets are on sale: say tickets are with the button beside the article. This is a unique opportunity to see a classic film on the big screen, with its blend of action, fantasy, and dark humour.

The film's dark and imaginative world, created by Tim Burton, is a key part of its appeal. With its gothic imagery, oddball characters, and fractured protagonists, Batman Returns is a firm step away from the character's source material and toward Burton's ethos and aesthetic. The film's cast, including Michael Keaton, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danny DeVito, deliver performances that are both iconic and memorable. Whether or not viewers are fans of the comic book franchise, Batman Returns is a film that offers something unique and captivating.

7.4/10. *Batman Returns* is a firm step up from the *Batman* film that precedes it, but it’s also a firm step away from the character’s source material and toward Burton’s ethos and aesthetic. Batman’s no killing code has been scrapped; his enemies’ backstories and personalities have been changed, and major foils are invented for the film out of whole cloth. But at the same time, Burton creates his own imaginative world from these comic book…

"Batman Returns" is much less of a Batman movie than it is a Tim Burton movie. After the first movie's success, Burton gets carried away by the Christmas spirit of "Edward Scissorhands", and applies the same gothic-pop fairytale tropes and aesthetics to the Batman franchise. Who cares if the Penguin was just a regular fat dude? Let's turn him into a mutant with a full-blown circus freakshow. Who cares if Batman is supposed to be the protagonist?…

Ah, Batman Returns, is it possible to have a sequel to be almost as good as the original? With Batman Returns, it came pretty close! We have terrific actors and a great plot with the dark knight and two new villains, Catwoman and The Penguin. We have Michael Keaton back as Batman and he's still awesome than ever. Michelle Pfieffer, the perfect choice for Catwoman and was perfectly cast into place. Danny DeVito, who could have imagined him as The…

Danny DeVito makes me really enjoy this film. Like, seriously I love him in this movie. Sure, the character is turned into a super Tim Burton style villain, but I don't care. It is hilariously engaging. So yea, this one certainly turns a bit stronger into the Burton style altogether with the first one's success. I think after that, he got to do exactly what he wanted. Some directors do a better job when restrained a bit. Otherwise he gets pretty…

I love how all Burton's Batman FMC have glasses, he's healing my inner child 😭😭 Anyway, I was scared of Burton’s movies as a child and this made no exception, the Penguin scared the sh*t out of me but he’s actually a really tragic figure, it totally makes sense that Burton wanted to give his take on the character. Ok, maybe this isn’t really the greatest kid-friendly film but who cares, they deserve to be traumatized like I was 😭😭

My Name Is Not Oswald! It's Penguin. I Am Not A Human Being! I Am An Animal!" Now this is what a Tim burton Batman movie should look like the first was dark but this sequel feels like him at his absolute best full of dark gothic themes and with weird characters and dialogue that makes this a fantastic follow up and a even better film. The story I find more easier to follow this time with Penguins story and catwomans being the main focus. Tim…
