The repercussions of the ongoing apartheid and genocide in Palestine will extend far beyond the Middle East, argues Tareq Baconi, with only two possible outcomes: justice or annihilation. This stark reality is the foundation of his talk, What Now: On Palestine, Freedom, and Our Global Future, which will take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, at Resident Music in Brighton.
Tareq Baconi's work is deeply rooted in his experiences as a Palestinian writer, scholar, and activist, and his book What Now draws on conversations with Palestinian thought leaders and is guided by the thawabet principles set by the Palestinian National Council in 1977. As the president of the board of Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, and a research fellow at the University of the Western Cape's Centre for Humanities Research, Baconi's expertise on the subject is unparalleled. His writing has appeared in prominent publications such as The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and The Baffler, and his books, including Hamas Contained and Fire in Every Direction, have been widely acclaimed.
In What Now, Baconi sets out three strategic priorities for a free Palestine: refusing a divided homeland, reviving the revolutionary politics of freedom and justice, and decomposing Zionism. This vision for a postcolonial future is not about turning back the clock, but about creating a new struggle for justice and freedom in the aftermath of Zionism. By challenging and upturning the colonial and genocidal mindsets that continue to animate Western thought, a free Palestine would heal the wounds left in the wake of the second world war, and have far-reaching implications for the world.
Baconi's talk will be a unique opportunity to hear him discuss his vision for a free Palestine, and the implications of the ongoing apartheid and genocide in the region. With his extensive knowledge and experience, Baconi's talk is sure to be a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the complexities of the issue.
