Shuggie Otis Brings Freedom Flight

The album Freedom Flight, released in 1971, is a masterpiece of technical skill and virtuosic composition, featuring the hit single Strawberry Letter 23, which was later covered by The Brothers Johnson. Shuggie Otis, born Johnny Alexander Veliotes Jr. in Los Angeles in 1953, is a singer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist who grew up playing in his father Johnny Otis's band. He began playing guitar at the age of two and performed professionally with his father's band at eleven.

Otis's music career spans decades, with his debut album Here Comes Shuggie Otis released in 1970, followed by Freedom Flight in 1971, and Inspiration Information in 1974. His albums have gained a cult following among rare groove and acid jazz fans, and have been praised by notable artists such as Prince and Lenny Kravitz. Otis's unique sound is a blend of lush arrangements, hard funk rhythms, and funky blues melodies, making him a standout artist in his genre.
