Pay What You Can, everyday at Charleston in Lewes
4 Nov 2026 – 11 Apr 2027
Charleston (Lewes)
On Wednesday, 4 November 2026, Charleston in Lewes will launch its pay-what-you-can admission scheme, allowing visitors to see the current exhibitions for any amount they choose, from nothing upwards, every Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm, at Charleston in Lewes. Tickets are with the button beside the article. • The scheme will cover the exhibitions On Being Ill and Mad Bloomsbury, with the former presenting modern and contemporary responses to Virginia Woolf's essay 'On Being Ill' and the latter re-examining Bloomsbury histories through disability, neurodiversity and lived experience. • Mad Bloomsbury will include a rare public display of works by Helen Coombe, the artist and long-term institutionalised wife of Roger Fry, and is co-produced with the Mad Heritage Collective and curated by Hazel McMichael. • Free drop-in family workshops will be available on pay-what-you-can days, suitable for children aged 4 and over who must be accompanied by an adult, with examples including Say It With a Sign and Still Life Studio.
The pay-what-you-can scheme is a significant development for Charleston, making its exhibitions more accessible to a wider audience. The scheme does not cover the house or the exhibitions at Charleston in Firle, although Firle has monthly pay-what-you-can Sundays. With the exhibitions running until Monday, 12 April 2027, visitors have plenty of time to take advantage of the new admission scheme and explore the current shows at Charleston in Lewes.
