Shalom Documentary Gala
A poignant documentary exploring the current state of Israel through the lens of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo. Director Meital Zvieli presents a unique perspective on the region's complexities.

Meital Zvieli is known for her thought-provoking documentaries, and her latest film, Shalom, is no exception. This documentary gala, taking place on Saturday, 14 November 2026, at the Curzon Canterbury Westgate in Canterbury, offers a unique perspective on the current state of Israel. The film is set against the backdrop of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo, where a diverse group of Israelis and Palestinians work together to care for the animals, including an ancient and ailing white rhino named Shalom.
As war breaks out, the zookeepers must make difficult decisions about the fate of Shalom, raising questions about the true nature of their peaceful oasis. Is it a genuine utopia, or a manufactured haven for the sake of appearances? The film is accompanied by a short film, Fish, Chips and Faith, which tells the story of a Leeds restaurant that brings communities together through food.
The documentary gala will be held at the Curzon Canterbury Westgate in Canterbury on Saturday, 14 November 2026. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
