Pubs For The People Event Comes To Brighton
A new book defends the humble public house as a symbol of a more equal England, and its authors will discuss their work in Brighton. The event will feature a conversation with the authors and a book signing.

The authors of Pubs for the People, Amit Singh and Sivamohan Valluvan, will be discussing their book at the Caroline of Brunswick in Brighton on Thursday, 5 November 2026. Their book presents a defence of the public house as a vital part of English culture, one that is often misunderstood or overlooked. By sharing tales of Singh's father, who founded London's first 'Desi pub', and their own travels to various pubs across the country, the authors highlight the pub's potential to bring people together.
The conversation will be hosted by Malcolm James from the Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies and Phil Mellows, and will be followed by an audience question and answer session, as well as a book signing. This event will provide a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with the authors and their work, and to explore the ideas presented in Pubs for the People.
Tickets are with the button beside the article. The event is free, making it accessible to a wide range of people. By attending, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of pubs in modern England and their potential to foster a more equal and sociable society.
