Behind the Curtain
Discover the hidden history of Eastbourne's oldest working theatre on a guided tour. The Royal Hippodrome Theatre Friends invite visitors to explore areas normally closed to the public.

The Royal Hippodrome Theatre has been a part of Eastbourne's cultural landscape since 1883, when it first opened as the New Theatre Royal and Opera House.
Its history is a rich tapestry of performances, from variety shows featuring Harry Houdini and Marie Lloyd, to plays and films starring Vic Oliver and Elsie and Doris Waters. In more recent years, the theatre has undergone significant refurbishments under the ownership of Alex and Debbie Adams, who have worked tirelessly to restore the venue to its former glory.
The Theatre Tour, which starts at 10:30am on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, at the Royal Hippodrome Theatre in Eastbourne, offers a unique glimpse into the theatre's hidden spaces. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore areas normally closed to the public, guided by knowledgeable volunteers who are part of the Friends scheme. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
