The Weight is a solid action drama with plenty working in its favor. The performances are strong, the tension builds naturally, and the setting is gorgeous. However, the character development falls short and many beats feel familiar. The film leaves plenty of potential on the table, but it does enough to make the experience worthwhile.

After hearing very positive things about this back in January 2026 at Sundance, I've been patiently waiting for its release. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the distributors are putting much behind it, because the release is pretty limited and I haven't seen much advertising. If that's the case, it's a shame, because now that I've seen it I feel like it would be a crowd pleaser if they could actually get a crowd to go see it (my showtime…

This one was right there for me. I enjoyed the performances and the central story, but lost focus a few times. That's on me, but the pacing could have been accelerated slightly in a few spots. Also there's one scene that was fun from a cinematic perspective but asinine from a realism standpoint. Just shy of a rounding up to an 8. We'll go 7.4 on this one.

Good cast delivering good performances, though Russell Crowe is very underused. Concerning the story, it is difficult to accept the nonsensical basic idea of the plot, that is letting convicts transport a fortune in gold during the great depression and expecting them to deliver it on time... And even when you are willing to do so, there are some scenes, like the one on the bridge (no spoiler yet), that just make no sense at all and get you out…

Amazing. I love Ethan Hawke and this one was great. It was SO refreshing that for once they didn't show a graffic rape scene like they always do. This was the only time I felt like that plot was needed for a movie and handled with care. Also, the ending: dream blunt rotation.

The incredible opening sequence sets the tone for the rest of the movie, and while it doesn’t sustain that level for the entire runtime, it’s easily one of the more captivating films of the year. In an age of green screens and CGI, it’s refreshing to see a tale built on grime and dirt, with the natural wilderness serving as the backdrop for the physical toll of greed, desperation, and injustice. Ethan Hawke is a natural at conveying the grit his…

Just a decent action, packed thriller movie about a man who is at a prison labor camp wanting to get out early so he can meet back up with his daughter. But in order to do that he takes an illegal job from the warden to get an early release. Takes place in the 1900s in the gold mines of Oregon. And action packed/spooky thriller adventure through the woods on a dangerous mission. The acting plot development was just decent. Just a decent watch.…
