Aswad's 1988 UK number one hit Don't Turn Around is a testament to the band's ability to craft infectious, reggae-infused pop songs that resonate with a wide audience. Formed in 1975 in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London, Aswad was founded by a group of young people of Caribbean descent who began playing roots reggae, addressing the experiences of black youths growing up in the UK. The original line-up included Brinsley 'Chaka B' Forde, Angus 'Drummie Zeb' Gaye, Donald 'Dee' Griffiths, George 'Ras' Oban, and Courtney 'Khaki' Hemmings, with Tony 'Gad' Robinson joining the band in 1976.

Aswad's music has undergone a significant evolution over the years, shifting from roots reggae to a smoother sound with R&B and soul influences. This transition is evident in hits like Give a Little Love and Shine, which showcase the band's ability to blend different styles and create a unique sound. With 21 albums under their belt and three Grammy Award nominations, Aswad has established themselves as a major force in British reggae. Their official site describes them as arguably Britain's most successful reggae band, and their later pop-crossover phase has incorporated funk and soul elements.

The band's live performances have been a hallmark of their career, with notable gigs including a live dub set at Meanwhile Gardens during the Notting Hill Carnival in 1983 and a performance with Cliff Richard at Wembley Stadium in 1989. Aswad has also toured extensively, visiting countries such as Israel, Japan, and West Africa. Despite the departure of founding vocalist Brinsley Forde in 1996 and the passing of drummer Angus Gaye in 2022, Tony Robinson remains a constant presence in the line-up, ensuring that Aswad's legacy continues to thrive.

On Friday, 6 November 2026, Aswad will headline the Roots & Soul event at Brighton Centre, Brighton, alongside very special guest The Real Thing and support from The Marley Experience and a Mi-Soul DJ. Tickets are with the button beside the article. With their rich history and enduring popularity, Aswad's performance is set to be an unforgettable experience, showcasing the band's signature blend of reggae, R&B, and soul. Aswad's music has stood the test of time, and their upcoming performance at Roots & Soul is a chance to experience their unique sound live.
