University Symphony Orchestra Winter Concert

Classical music enthusiasts are in for a treat as the University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra prepares to take to the stage at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts in Brighton on Wednesday, 9 December 2026. The orchestra, which has a long history dating back to 1969, is a student-led society that brings together talented musicians from the university and the wider community.

The University of Sussex Symphony Orchestra has a distinctive approach, being mainly non-auditioned and open to students from both the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton. This inclusive approach has allowed the orchestra to thrive, with support from the Meeting House and the university's Music Department. The orchestra is conducted by Ed Hughes, a renowned composer and Professor of Composition.

The winter concert programme is set to feature a range of exciting pieces, including Schubert's 'Unfinished Symphony', a suite of music from Howard Shore's 'Lord of the Rings' scores, and Rachmaninov's 'Piano Concerto No. 2', with orchestra member Frederic Collinge as soloist.
