Where Else? (Margate)
What draws you to a band that describes themselves as a 'two-piece softcore punk band'? For Big Woes, it's the unlikely pairing of musician and comedy writer Kit Proudfoot and songwriter and sound designer Joe Farley that creates a captivating sound. The duo met at a party and began writing together after Proudfoot moved to Margate in 2019, marking the beginning of their musical journey.
As a two-piece from Margate, Big Woes have carved out a niche for themselves in the town's fertile music community. Their sound, which they describe as 'post-punk laced with poetry', is characterized by Proudfoot's jagged, comic spoken-word verses and Farley's heavy, lo-fi bass and electronic textures. This unique blend has drawn comparisons to notable artists such as John Cooper Clarke, The Fall, and Sleaford Mods. With their self-produced debut EP, Heavy Work, released in 2024, and a follow-up EP produced by Mike Lindsay of Tunng, Big Woes have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the music scene.
Big Woes' music often explores themes that are both personal and relatable, as seen in their songs about boxer Tyson Fury and running a small business. Their track 'Man in America' appeared on the compilation A Margate Sampler, released by Awkwardness Happening, a label set up by Sammy Clarke, owner of Where Else?. This showcase of Margate's music community is a testament to the town's thriving artistic scene. As part of this scene, Big Woes have played a significant role, including being the support act for Ramsgate Festival of Sound's Look Mum No Computer show at the Granville Theatre.
With their upcoming performance at the Margate Sampler Launch Party, Big Woes are set to take the spotlight alongside other notable acts such as Fruit Band, JOLT, and Debdepan. The event, presented by Awkwardness Happening, will feature a range of music styles, including post-punk, indie, and electronic. On Saturday, 7 November 2026, at Where Else? in Margate, Big Woes will showcase their distinctive sound, which is sure to leave a lasting impression. Tickets are on sale, available with the button beside the article.
As Big Woes continue to make waves in the music scene, their unique sound and energetic live performances are not to be missed. With their blend of post-punk and poetry, they offer a refreshing take on traditional music genres.
