Lael Neale Brings Introspective Sound

Lael Neale's latest release, As Killers Do, is a ten-song set that showcases her ability to move between different musical styles, from 1960s girl-group echoes to proto-punk and psych-pop. This new record, due for release on 20 November 2026, is her first self-release on her new imprint Consensual Sound and features handmade covers for the limited vinyl edition. The record was made on a cassette eight-track in a Los Angeles kitchen, highlighting Neale's lo-fi approach to music production.

Born and raised on a farm in rural Virginia, Lael Neale moved to Los Angeles to pursue music, where she began writing songs on guitar and playing small venues. It was not until she discovered the Omnichord in 2019 that her music took a new creative direction. Her collaboration with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee has been instrumental in shaping her sound, which is characterized by its minimalist arrangements and introspective lyrics. Neale's music has been praised by Iggy Pop, who noted that she brings a fresh approach to the female singer-songwriter tradition.

Neale's discography includes several albums on Sub Pop Records, including Acquainted With Night and Altogether Stranger. Her music often explores themes of solitude and contemplation, and she is known for her unique blend of influences, which range from garage rock to Motorik dance dirges. With her new record, As Killers Do, Neale continues to push the boundaries of her sound, experimenting with new styles and approaches to music production.

On Friday, 6 November 2026, Lael Neale will perform at Where Else? in Margate, showcasing her introspective sound and unique blend of musical influences. The event will run until Friday, 11 December 2026. Tickets are with the button beside the article.
