Painting, a Berlin trio, came together in 2020 amidst the pandemic, with members Theresa Stroetges, Christian Hohenbild, and Sophia Trollmann sharing vocals and frequently swapping instruments. Their music is a breathlessly unpredictable collision of punk energy, math-rock time signatures, techno beats, free-jazz sax solos, and tumbling call-and-response vocals. This eclectic sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of Late of the Pier, CSS, and Klaxons.

The band's origins are rooted in the German music scene, with Stroetges and Hohenbild previously performing together in the band Soft Grid. Their debut album, Painting Is Dead, was released in 2022 to critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone hailing them as the greatest new band in the German pop avant-garde. A deluxe double CD edition of the album was later reissued by Lost Map Records, featuring remixes and a live album recorded at Kantine am Berghain. Their second album, Snapshot Of Pure Attention, explores the theme of artificial intelligence, lending their voices and bodies to the language model LaMDA.

Cracked Lime, a London-based duo, brings a unique sound that is both interesting and moody, drawing comparisons to Working Mens Club, New Order, and Suicide. Their tracks are a testament to their ability to craft compelling music that is both fun and thought-provoking. Lulu, on the other hand, has a sound that is simultaneously original and reminiscent of trip hop artists like Portishead, Tricky, and Bjork. Her music is ghostly, beautiful, and strange, leaving a lasting impression on listeners.

The three acts are set to perform at Where Else? in Margate on Friday, 30 October 2026. With Painting's unpredictable energy, Cracked Lime's moody tracks, and Lulu's haunting sound, this show is sure to be a compelling experience.
