Whitstable Arts Centre Hosts Gaven Alexander

On Friday, 6 November 2026, The Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable will host Studio Sessions: Still life oil painting with Gaven Alexander, a monthly course that will run until Friday, 4 December 2026. Led by Gaven Alexander, a self-taught artist with a passion for capturing light and the natural world, this course is designed to teach the fundamentals of still life painting using oils. Participants will learn about setting up their composition, capturing light, and glazing to create depth in their artwork, as well as how to get the best out of using oil paint as a medium.

Gaven Alexander's experience and style make him an ideal instructor for this course. With over 30 years of painting experience, he has developed a unique style that is inspired by the natural world and the effects of light. His dramatic seascapes, which use light and the natural power of nature as inspiration, are held in private collections around the world. Gaven's approach to teaching is also noteworthy, as he works at a pace to suit the class, making this course suitable for both beginners and experienced painters.

The course will cover a range of topics, including setting up a composition, capturing light, and glazing to create depth. All materials will be provided, but participants are invited to bring along an item or items of their choice to study. Gaven will also bring a selection of objects for participants to use if they prefer. The course is designed to be flexible, with each session taking place once a month, allowing for full drying time between layers of paint.
