In 14th-century England, a humble peasant sparks a rebellion against the ruling elite, uniting ordinary people in a desperate fight for justice and survival. This is the premise of The Uprising, a historical action drama film written, produced, and directed by Paul Greengrass. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Andrew Garfield, Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, and Tom Hollander, who bring to life the key figures of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
The Uprising is a 128-minute film, rated 15, and features a mix of action, drama, and history. The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with scores of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, 53/100 on Metacritic, 7.9/10 on TMDB, and 70% on Trakt. While some critics have praised the film's performances, action sequences, and contemporary social relevance, others have criticized its bleak tone, aesthetics, and Greengrass's signature handheld shaky camera style.
Critics have noted that the film's attempt to tie the story into the Robin Hood legend can feel awkward and distracting, with some describing the epilogue as "bizarre" and "anachronistic". The film's contemporary resonance, particularly in its depiction of corrupt oligarchs and growing wealth inequality, has also been highlighted as a notable aspect.

Some have noted that the film feels disjointed, with a rushed opening and a dragging second half, while others have appreciated the film's unique story structure and historical significance.

I wanted this to work for me more than it did. There are some good ideas here and a couple of moments that really landed, but I never felt properly pulled into the story. It looks good and there’s clearly something interesting underneath it all, but I kept finding myself waiting for it to really take off.

Yeah not the best film. Very drab and dull, Kind of ugly to look at. The characters aren't very interesting either. It might be worth one watch but I wouldn't suggest making it a priority.

I wanted to like this and was certainly biased toward its cast, but in the end it just didn't work for me. The story feels disjointed - rushed in its opening and then dragging in the back half. Ultimately it just felt too simplistic. I liked the idea of a Westeros-style small council advising/manipulating the king, but they don't do much with it. The king's arc also felt unearned/unmotivated, making the final act fall flat. Still, strong…

The story structure of first act is kinda crazy. It’s as if you’re experiencing moments in a story missing some connective tissue. It feels sort of like this was originally intended to be a miniseries rather than a feature film. Don’t get me wrong those moments are interesting but come across as disjointed pieces of a larger narrative. It does start to come together as the movie progresses which helped a fair amount. However by the time I reach…

I am sucker for this kind of historical movies, and they usually make me drool - it's not hard to please me in this genre. But this movie... fails... a bit. The bad: the pacing is awful, I must say. The shaky camera still... so weird. And that's the bad part. The good: the acting is generally good (the main guys in the revolt, especially), the portrayal of the Revolt is pretty good and the outfit, this "painting" of that era... all good! The…
