In 1930s New York, a gifted young violinist is forced to confront the harsh realities of professional boxing, in a world that demands he choose between his artistic passion and material fulfilment. This powerful story is brought to life in a filmed live performance from the Almeida Theatre, directed by Sam Yates and starring Josh O'Connor, with a live string quartet adding to the emotional depth of the play.
Clifford Odets, the American playwright behind Golden Boy, was a founding member of the Group Theatre and is widely regarded as one of the most influential playwrights of his generation. His plays, including Awake and Sing! and Golden Boy, often explored the tensions between artistic and material fulfilment, and his work has been cited as an inspiration by many later playwrights, including Arthur Miller and David Mamet.
The screening of Golden Boy will take place on Thursday, 19 November 2026, at The Astor Theatre in Deal. Tickets are with the button beside the article. With its powerful story, talented cast, and unique blend of music and drama, this is a performance not to be missed.
