Roots rock, infused with blues, country, and jazz, defined the distinctive sound of Dire Straits, a British rock band formed in Deptford, south-east London, in 1977. The band's origins trace back to the Knopfler brothers, Mark and David, who were born in Glasgow and grew up in Blyth, and were joined by John Illsley and Pick Withers to create the initial lineup. Their debut single, Sultans of Swing, achieved significant chart success in both the UK and US.
Dire Straits' discography boasts numerous acclaimed albums, including Brothers in Arms, which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and On Every Street, their sixth and final studio album. The band's sound was characterised by Mark Knopfler's unique fingerstyle guitar technique, and their influence drew from various genres. With a string of awards, including four Grammy Awards and three Brit Awards, Dire Straits cemented their position as a prominent rock band.
The performance, recorded at the Arènes de Nîmes in Nîmes, France, on 29 September 1992, showcases the band's exceptional talent and energy.
