28 Oct 2026 – 7 Mar 2027

Charleston (Lewes)

Quentin Bell's artistic career began at the age of six, when he arrived at Charleston and started digging clay from the pond to build ceramic towers. This early creativity is just one aspect of his artistic practice that will be on display at the exhibition, which brings together over 100 works in ceramics, sculpture, painted objects, and works on paper.

• The exhibition will feature a range of Bell's ceramic figures, including those that levitate and others that introduce a dimension of mixed-media magic. • Visitors will also have the opportunity to see his illustrated novels, which veer into the dystopian, and his 'Goggle Boxes', which showcase his unique approach to art. • Large sculptural works, including the 'Levitating Figure', 'Pomona', and 'The Spink', will be sited across the grounds of Charleston, extending the exhibition beyond the galleries into the house and garden.

The exhibition, which runs from Wednesday, 28 October 2026, to Sunday, 7 March 2027, at Charleston in Lewes, is a rare opportunity to encounter the full range of Bell's career, from childhood invention to his mature works. Tickets are with the button beside the article. With its focus on the handmade and the joy of making, this exhibition is a reminder of the value of human creativity in a world where so much is computer-generated and machine-made.
