Brighton's Juliet & Romeo

Originating from the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, this new production, Juliet & Romeo, offers a unique twist on the iconic story. The narrative picks up where the original left off, but with a surprising turn of events: the two lovers did not die in a tragic misunderstanding, instead, they grew up, got married, and are now navigating the challenges of adulthood. As they approach middle age, they find themselves struggling with the pressures of married life and the lingering memories of their extraordinary youth.

The performance, directed by the acclaimed Ben Duke, who has won an Olivier Award for his direction and choreography, is a duet that combines dance and dialogue to tell the story of Juliet and Romeo's marital crisis. With their therapist's warning that performing about themselves is a terrible idea, the couple decides to take the leap and confront their issues head-on. Through this performance, they aim to reconcile their past and present selves, and come to terms with the ordinariness of adult life. The show's use of dark comedy and heartfelt moments creates a captivating narrative that explores the complexities of modern relationships.

Ben Duke's direction brings a fresh perspective to the classic tale, and his experience in choreography adds a unique element to the performance. The show's ability to balance humor and poignancy makes it a compelling watch, and the exploration of themes such as youth, adulthood, and relationships will resonate with audiences. As Judith Mackrell from The Guardian notes, the performance is a "blissfully wry, subverted version of Romeo and Juliet," which showcases the couple's journey as they dance and talk their way through their story.
