Gypsy-jazz is a genre that combines elements of jazz, folk, and world music, characterized by its energetic and lively sound, often featuring acoustic instruments such as guitars and double basses. Django Chutney, a Brighton-based trio, embodies this spirit with their unique blend of gypsy-jazz, New Orleans jazz, Chicago blues, and Parisian musette.
What is Django Chutney's background? Django Chutney began in October 2021, after a chance meeting led to a first gig that lasted over six hours, marking the start of their partnership. The trio consists of Jed Cutler, Tom Bailey, and Ben Mack, who share guitar and bass work, and sing in three-part harmony.
What kind of music can we expect from Django Chutney? Their repertoire covers a wide range of styles, from 1930s Hot Club material to New Orleans jazz, Chicago blues, and Parisian musette, often with a streak of humour. Their music is characterized by virtuosic guitar and bass playing, and three-part vocal harmonies in the style of the Mills Brothers and the Ink Spots.
What's next for Django Chutney? Django Chutney will be performing with pianist Mike Hatchard at the Kino-Teatr in St Leonards-on-Sea on Sunday, 8 November 2026, at 11am. Tickets are on sale: say tickets are with the button beside the article.
