On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, visitors to the Royal Pavilion in Brighton will have the opportunity to delve into the mysterious world of Preston Manor's ghostly encounters. The historic house, with its origins dating back to medieval times and remodelled interiors for Edwardian life, has a long history of tales of the supernatural. From reports of the mysterious Lady in Grey on the staircase to unexplained activity in the house's bedrooms, Preston Manor's paranormal reputation has been enduring. One of the most famous stories centres on an 1896 séance in the Cleves Room, where medium Ada Goodrich Freer claimed to have communicated with a spirit identifying herself as Sister Agnes.
The Spirit Ledger initiative, led by Project Lead Kate Turnbull, invites visitors to record their unexplained experiences using 'Ghost-it' notes, which will be collected and used to build a clearer picture of the paranormal activity reported at the manor. This will also contribute to plans for a book and events next year, including the popular Ghostly Gatherings after-dark events. By sharing their experiences, visitors will become part of the manor's heritage, adding to the rich history of ghost stories that have become an integral part of its charm.
Ada Goodrich Freer, the medium at the centre of the 1896 séance, was a British medium, clairvoyant, and psychical researcher who wrote under the pseudonym "Miss X". Her work was published in various spiritualist quarterlies, including Borderland, where she was assistant editor. However, her investigations into hauntings, including the Ballechin House case, drew heavy criticism, and she was later accused of fraud and caught cheating at a séance. Despite the doubts surrounding her credibility, Freer's 1896 séance in the Cleves Room remains one of Preston Manor's best-known ghost stories.
The Spirit Ledger initiative will run until Monday, 30 November 2026, at 23:00, giving visitors ample time to explore the manor and share their paranormal experiences. The Royal Pavilion in Brighton is the perfect setting for this initiative, offering a glimpse into the past alongside the stories and mysteries that have become part of Preston Manor's heritage. Tickets are with the button beside the article, allowing visitors to plan their visit and become part of the manor's ghostly legacy.
As the Spirit Ledger grows, it will provide a unique insight into the paranormal activity reported at Preston Manor, shedding light on the historic house's long association with ghost stories. By sharing their experiences, visitors will not only contribute to the manor's heritage but also become part of a larger conversation about the supernatural and the unexplained. Whether you have seen something, heard something, or simply felt that you weren't alone, the Spirit Ledger invites you to share your story and become part of Preston Manor's enduring ghostly encounters.
