Uncovering Lesbian Lives
A new exhibition and event series at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton explores the representation of lesbian lives in museum collections. Museum Educator and PhD Researcher Lisa Hinkins leads the project, which aims to provide a framework for other institutions to better understand and represent lesbian lives.

Lisa Hinkins, Museum Educator at Brighton & Hove Museums, began her research into the representation of lesbian lives in museum collections in October 2024. Her project, which is also the subject of her PhD research at the University of Brighton, examines the inclusion of historic and contemporary lesbian lives and identities in the collections, including material objects and their cataloging in the digital system, MIMSY. The research focuses on Fine and Decorative Arts, Fashion and Dress, World Art, and Local History, and has involved working with community volunteers to develop new perspectives and approaches to museum practice.
As part of her research, Hinkins has developed community-building workshops to inform future museum practices and stimulate diverse debate and research. These workshops resulted in the creation of an automaton, a self-operating mechanical device, and a small exhibition, 'Where are all the Lesbians?' at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. The exhibition, which runs from 3 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, features objects from the collections, text panels, and workshop materials, and provides a unique insight into the lives and experiences of lesbian individuals throughout history.
Hinkins' work is intended to provide a framework for other institutions to map community outreach and research, and to better understand and represent lesbian lives in their collections. Her research combines gender and sexuality studies, art history, material and visual culture, and museum studies, and is informed by her own experiences as a curator and educator. As a co-curator of the Queer the Pier exhibition at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Hinkins has a deep understanding of the importance of representing LGBTQ+ lives and histories in museum collections.
The event, 'Where are the lesbians? Searching for lesbian lives in museums', will take place on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. Tickets are on sale: say tickets are with the button beside the article. This event provides a unique opportunity to learn about Hinkins' research and its findings, and to explore the often-overlooked topic of lesbian representation in museums. By examining the ways in which lesbian lives are represented in museum collections, Hinkins' project aims to promote greater understanding and inclusivity, and to provide a framework for other institutions to follow.
The exhibition and event series are part of a broader effort to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and representation in museums and cultural institutions. Hinkins' work builds on a long history of LGBTQ+ activism and advocacy, and contributes to a growing body of research and scholarship on the topic. By exploring the representation of lesbian lives in museum collections, Hinkins' project sheds new light on the experiences and histories of lesbian individuals, and provides a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity and diversity in cultural institutions.
