The Verdict (Brighton)

Jazz music, with its rich history and diverse influences, has always been a genre that thrives on creativity and experimentation. At the forefront of this movement is Danish jazz bassist Jasper Høiby, known for his outstanding music and virtuosic skills. Born in Copenhagen in 1977, Høiby began his musical journey in Denmark before moving to London in 2001 to study at the Royal Academy of Music. It was in London that he became an integral part of the city's jazz scene, forming the piano trio Phronesis in 2005 and releasing the critically acclaimed album Alive in 2010.

Høiby's musical career has been marked by a series of innovative projects, including Fellow Creatures, inspired by Naomi Klein's book on climate change, and Planet B. However, it is his 3Elements trio that has been gaining attention in recent years, with its unique blend of freedom and form. The trio, which features rotating pianists and drummers, has released several albums, including Earthness and Like Water, and most recently, Conversations of Hope, which features Xavi Torres on piano and Naíma Acuña on drums. This album, released on Edition Records in March 2026, is described as music that moves fast and hits hard, with clear melodic ideas, shifting time signatures, and an acute sense of space.

Høiby's music is characterized by its driving, structured writing and its open, improvised interplay. This unique sound has garnered praise from notable figures in the jazz scene, including Gilles Peterson and MOJO, who have complimented his ability to fashion pieces that are both free and structured. With his 3Elements trio, Høiby continues to push the boundaries of jazz music, creating a sound that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

On Friday, 20 November 2026, Jasper Høiby's 3Elements trio will be performing at The Verdict in Brighton, featuring Xavi Torres on piano and Naíma Acuña on drums.
