Hands-On Wild Clay Exploration
Join artist Holly Dawes for a unique workshop where you'll forage for natural clay and experiment with its possibilities. This hands-on event is perfect for those looking to get creative and explore the potential of wild clay.

You'll be working with wild clay, experimenting with its textures, colours, and qualities, and creating a piece that will be fired and available to collect after the workshop. The day begins with a foraging session at Rock-a-Nore, where you'll learn to identify natural clay in the landscape, and then moves to the studio for a hands-on exploration of the material.
What kind of activities can participants expect to do during the workshop? The workshop will involve processing the clay, testing its properties, and experimenting with different techniques, such as using it as a slip to decorate commercial clay or working with it as a clay body. You'll also have the chance to mix the wild clay with other natural clays and materials, and compare the colours, textures, and qualities of clays collected from different places along the coastline.
Who will be leading the workshop? The workshop will be led by artist Holly Dawes, who will guide participants through the process of working with wild clay and provide expertise on its properties and potential uses.
When and where will the workshop take place, and how can people find out more? The workshop will take place on Saturday, 13 February 2027, at Hastings Contemporary in Hastings, and tickets or details are available with the button beside this article.
