Wes Anderson, known for his distinctive visual style and offbeat sense of humour, has crafted a film that is both a nostalgic ode to childhood and a nuanced exploration of young love. Moonrise Kingdom follows the story of two troubled 12-year-olds who fall in love and run away together, turning their small community upside down. The film features a talented cast, including Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Bruce Willis, and Frances McDormand, and is set on a fictional island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965.

The film's use of Benjamin Britten's music adds to its unique charm, with Anderson drawing inspiration from his own childhood experiences with Britten's works. The result is a cinematic world that is both meticulously crafted and deeply personal. With its 94-minute runtime and 12A certificate, Moonrise Kingdom is a comedy-drama-romance that has captivated audiences with its intricate narrative and stunning visuals.

Moonrise Kingdom has received widespread critical acclaim, with scores of 7.7/10 on IMDb, 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, 84/100 on Metacritic, 7.7/10 on TMDB, and 78% on Trakt. The film has also won numerous awards, including 36 wins and 121 nominations, and was nominated for an Oscar. Critics have praised the film's use of visual symmetry, its original composition by Alexandre Desplat, and the performances of its cast, particularly the novice actors Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward.

The film will be screened at the Depot in Lewes on Wednesday, 11 November 2026. Tickets and details are available with the button beside this article. I liked it, but it wasn't my type of movie. Some moments were funny, and it was interesting somehow. I just didn't really get what. That's why I'm not rating it, because I'm sure I missed something and didn't get something about it. Funny thing is though, that I rated all the movies under "if you like Moonrise Kingdom, check these movies out..." with a 8 or higher.

Not the best WA film, but engaging and adeptly constructed.

"I love you, but you don't know what you're talking about." Such a wonderful movie. A young love story, beautiful cinematography, great music, fantastic acting from everyone including the new child actors. Definitely one of my favorite Wes Anderson's films.

Refreshing. I loved it. I'm so glad there are filmmakers like Wes Anderson who are still willing to make an actual film. Not a remake, not based on a true story or a book. Original material, with a point. Worth watching!

I was really hoping to love this movie but didn't seem to appreciate anything but the beautiful scenery and cinematography by Anderson. A really beautiful movie but I could not keep my attention fixated on it for more than five minutes. Disappointed.
