31 Oct 2026 – 3 Jan 2027

De La Warr Pavilion (Bexhill-on-Sea)

Gordon Matta-Clark was born in New York City and trained as an architect at Cornell University, but he never practised as a conventional architect. Instead, he used buildings and cities as the subject and material of his work, cutting large openings into structures slated for demolition. This approach allowed him to create unexpected views, passages, and spaces within existing structures.

The exhibition Discrete Violations at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea will bring together photographs, drawings, notebooks, correspondence, and films made during Matta-Clark's career. These materials will provide insight into the thinking and practical processes behind his projects, including his negotiations with officials and property owners. The exhibition will run from Saturday, 31 October 2026, until Sunday, 3 January 2027, at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea. Tickets are with the button beside the article.

Matta-Clark's work was not limited to his architectural interventions; he also co-founded FOOD, an artist-run restaurant in SoHo, and developed the idea of "anarchitecture," which explored leftover spaces and the rules of property. His practice has had a lasting impact on the art world, and his estate has been represented by David Zwirner since 1998. The Gordon Matta-Clark Archive is held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, and major retrospectives of his work have travelled to institutions around the world.
