They came from the Deep

Myths and folklore have long been entwined into the fabric of British culture and the historic town of Whitstable is no different. Taking inspiration from local stories, strange sightings and seafaring legends, ‘They Came From The Deep’ is a community project that will bring to life a new mythical folk tale inspired by our remarkable seaside town.
The project includes big build models for the annual Oyster Festival Parade, a summer exhibition in the Horsebridge galleries, and a programme of creative workshops and activities for children. The parade models will be part of the summer exhibition, which will inform the programme of creative workshops and activities.
Throughout July, there will be guided workshops and drop-in sessions to create models and carnival props for the Oyster Parade. The gallery will be filled with inspiring pictures, local stories, and legends, and plenty of materials to let imagination run wild.
In August, there will be a special programme of creative activities for young people, including storytelling, drawing, and animating workshops. Local storyteller Stella Fry will create stories and informal performances based around Whitstable’s rich history and traditional lore.
The project has been inspired by the collaboration with the Whitstable Oyster Festival, and the big build models will feature in the Oyster Parade. The parade will take place on the morning of Saturday 27 July, with timings and meeting places to follow.
