Mermaid Chunky is a danceable, costumed, curiosity-rich duo of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin. They are two visual artists and musicians from Stroud and South London, who found communities of like-minded people in Stroud’s SVA and the capital’s Total Refreshment Centre. Their music is a collective dance, made better with more people, ideas, layers, kick drums, recorders, saxophones, and frogs. Their album’s first track, “Céilí,” is a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering and dance, which builds from a simple recorder line into a swelling, warm burst of major chord dance music. Other tracks, such as “Chaperone,” “Frogsporn,” “Nature Girl,” and “Tiny Gymnast,” showcase their unique sound, which is a mix of electronic, experimental, and dance music. Mermaid Chunky has played live alongside notable artists and has been on a quest to create imaginative music.
