Marina Wheeler: Beyond Brexit – What Comes Next

Living just 21 miles from France, Folkestone knows better than most that Britain’s relationship with Europe is more than an abstract political debate. Human rights barrister and mediator Marina Wheeler KC joins us to discuss A More Perfect Union, her thoughtful and timely exploration of where that relationship goes next. Nearly a decade after the referendum, the question is no longer whether Britain should have left the European Union, but how we navigate the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly uncertain world. From security and trade to democracy, migration and the rule of law, Wheeler argues that Britain and Europe must find new ways to work together. Whether you voted Leave, Remain or have long since tired of the argument, this promises to be a lively and thought-provoking conversation about Britain’s future and the choices that lie ahead. This event will be chaired by Helen Coffey, a senior features writer at The Independent, whose journalism spans politics, climate change, health, culture and the changing world of work. With a keen interest in the political and social forces shaping modern Britain, she brings a thoughtful, questioning perspective to some of the most pressing issues of our time. A former travel editor and passionate advocate for sustainable travel, she is also the author of Zero Altitude: How I Learned to Fly Less and Travel More, a memoir challenging our assumptions about how, and why, we travel. Helen lives in Folkestone, where she enjoys sea swimming, running along the coastal path and singing. Folkestone Book Festival is our annual celebration of stories, ideas and conversation by the sea. Curated by novelist Sophie Haydock (The Flames, Madame Matisse), this year’s festival brings together more than 60 events across two weeks, welcoming world-class writers, thinkers and storytellers to Folkestone.
