Few writers have left a bigger mark on British television than Lynda La Plante. Creator of Prime Suspect and the groundbreaking detective Jane Tennison, she transformed the crime genre and captivated millions of viewers around the world. Lynda is arguably queen of crime drama, and now we delve into obsession. From Prime Suspect we move to Sudden Death. Lynda has been fascinated with the House of Romanov – the Romanovs – in Russia for some time. Their history, power, prominence and downfall have drawn her attention. One aspect that fascinated her were the gifts they gave in the form of stunning Fabergé eggs. She was fascinated by the work of Carl Fabergé, how he created a jewellery empire and in particular the eggs. Nine of these are missing to this day. Sudden Death is about the missing last egg and devises the murder it entailed. Obsession and crime meet perfectly. Returning with her brand-new novel, she joins us to look back on an extraordinary career, reveal what still inspires her as a writer, and explore why crime fiction continues to grip us. Whether you're a lifelong Prime Suspect fan or simply love a brilliant story, this promises to be a fascinating afternoon with one of Britain's true storytelling legends. This event will be chaired by Carol Woolton, jewellery historian, author and former jewellery editor of British Vogue, who has spent her career exploring the extraordinary stories behind the world’s most dazzling treasures. An acclaimed author and international exhibition curator, she’s equally fascinated by the people, power and passions behind the sparkle. Her podcast, If Jewels Could Talk, gives precious stones a voice, while her forthcoming exhibition at Florida’s Flagler Museum explores the glittering excesses of the Gilded Age. A member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, Carol knows that appearances can be deceiving and the most fascinating stories often lie beneath the surface. From priceless diamonds to deadly secrets, she’ll be swapping jewels for criminal investigations as she meets the legendary Lynda La Plante to explore a remarkable career filled with unforgettable characters, gripping mysteries and more than a little intrigue. Folkestone Book Festival is our annual celebration of stories, ideas and conversation by the sea. Curated by novelist Sophie Haydock (The Flames, Madame Matisse), this year’s festival brings together more than 60 events across two weeks, welcoming world-class writers, thinkers and storytellers to Folkestone. Discover another event, browse the bookshop, explore Folkestone’s vibrant arts scene, independent cafés, bars and galleries, and share the experience with a friend. The best festivals are as much about the conversations between events as those on stage. The Festival is part of Folkestone is a Library, our ambitious town-wide celebration of reading, writing and storytelling, helping make Folkestone one of the UK’s most exciting literary destinations. We believe great conversations should be for everyone, which is why every event includes a £5 Cost of Living Ticket, available with no questions asked. Please help us spread the word. Together, we’re building a thriving community of readers, writers and curious minds. Folkestone Book Festival is proudly supported by Eurotunnel, Canterbury Christ Church University, Holiday Extras, and the Friends of Folkestone Book Festival.
