Half-term Creative Workshop: Make Your Own Beast

Join artists Dawn East and Lauren Burrows as we use cardboard, light and shadow to create a strange nocturnal world inspired by the creatures that emerge after dark. You’ll start by choosing or inventing a nocturnal creature, then cut, layer and shape cardboard to build it in 3D. Experiment with different ways of constructing your creature – adding wings, legs, ears or tails, or creating simple moving parts that flap, turn or swing. The workshop artists will be on hand to glue-gun the different pieces together. You might make a fox, moth, bat, cat, owl or spider, or invent a creature of your own. As the session unfolds, we’ll experiment with light and silhouettes, bringing the creatures together across the space to create a temporary world of shadows and unexpected visitors. Inspired by Prem Sahib’s Fox (2004), currently on display in the De La Warr Pavilion gallery, the workshop explores what happens to familiar spaces after dark, when different creatures begin to move through them. This workshop is for 11–14-year-olds. No previous art experience is needed, just come ready to experiment, build and make.
