Growing up at Charleston

For the artist, Charleston was a refuge from London and the world at war. For the children who lived here, it was a playground of adventure and opportunity. ‘Growing Up at Charleston’ is a journey through the house, tracing the childhoods of Vanessa Bell’s children — Julian, Quentin and Angelica — through the rooms where they actually lived, played and grew up. Photographs by Vanessa Bell, family albums and rarely seen paintings and drawings from Charleston’s own archive bring their childhood to life, and offer further context for the ‘Quentin Bell’ exhibition.
