What if the recipe for a better life began with a badly behaved dog? Multi award-winning food writer Felicity Cloake joins journalist and author Claire Cohen to discuss Felicity’s fiction debut The Underdog – a funny, tender and sharply observed novel about food, friendship, reinvention and unexpected companionship. Best known for The Guardian’s much-loved “How to Cook the Perfect…” series and her bestselling culinary adventures, Cloake brings all her trademark wit, warmth and appetite to fiction for the first time. Expect lively conversation, plenty of laughs and reflections on cooking, loneliness, modern life and why sharing food with other humans – and occasionally your dog – can change everything. This event will be chaired by Anthony Leyton-Thomas, a Folkestone-based writer, editor, consultant and self-confessed show-off. Folkestone Book Festival is our annual celebration of stories, ideas and conversation by the sea. Curated by novelist Sophie Haydock (The Flames, Madame Matisse), this year’s festival brings together more than 60 events across two weeks, welcoming world-class writers, thinkers and storytellers to Folkestone. We believe great conversations should be for everyone, which is why every event includes a £5 Cost of Living Ticket, available with no questions asked.
