Paul Atreides’ journey from boy prince to bad apple is the most compelling story in sci-fi cinema. Before the spectacular Dune: Part Three, check out our guide to everything that’s happened in Denis Villeneuve’s epic universe so far.
Set two decades after the events of Dune 2, Atreides in midlife has become the very thing he set out to smash: a bloated, cynical Emperor, responsible for genocidal massacres across the known worlds, sleepwalking through a loveless marriage with Irula, haunted by visions of his lost soulmate Chani and the conspirators who creep ever-closer.
Those rival factions will be led by Robert Pattinson as Scytale: a lab-rat shapeshifter with designs on the throne – and one eye on the bathroom. With cinematographer Linus Sandgren conjuring the opulent sand-swirled backdrop to this toxic power struggle – and Villeneuve sure to go out with a bang – you don’t want to be anywhere but ODEON and IMAX on 18 December.
