Film + Conversation Night: Buena Vista Social Club (1999)

A celebration of music, memory and cultural revival

This Film + Conversation Night features Buena Vista Social Club, Wim Wenders’ 1999 documentary following Cuban musicians who reunite later in life to record an album and perform together after decades of being unheard beyond their local communities.

The film traces the journey of these artists from Havana to international stages, while remaining deeply rooted in their everyday lives, friendships and musical traditions. Through intimate portraits, rehearsal scenes and performances, the film explores how music carries memory, identity and connection across generations.

The screening will be followed by a facilitated conversation inviting reflection on the film’s themes, stories and cultural context.

Film synopsis

Buena Vista Social Club tells the story of a group of Cuban musicians whose careers were interrupted by political and social change, and who come together again in later life to record and share their music with the world.

The film follows their rehearsals in Havana, their recording sessions and their eventual performances abroad, weaving together personal histories, friendship and the enduring power of music as a carrier of culture, memory and joy.

Why this film matters

The film is a powerful reflection on cultural memory, ageing, recognition and the resilience of artistic traditions. It invites reflection on how cultures survive through people, how stories can be lost and found again, and how art can reconnect individuals with a sense of purpose, dignity and belonging.

It also opens space to think about cultural exchange, visibility and who gets heard — and when.
