This family-friendly session brings children and carers together around music and storytelling as a way to explore different cultures and traditions from around the world. Delivered by Nightingale Music as part of the Hidden Beach August programme, the sessions are hosted by music educator Danielle Gagnon of Nightingale Music and focus on music as a cultural and social language rather than a performance to watch.
Each session uses stories, listening and simple musical elements to introduce children to a particular musical tradition — for example the music of Native American cultures — and to explore how music is used in different communities for celebration, storytelling and connection.
The sessions are designed as shared experiences, where children and adults take part together through listening, imagination and gentle participation, creating space for curiosity, reflection and conversation.
What the sessions include
Guided storytelling that introduces a specific musical culture or tradition
Listening activities using recorded and live examples of music
Simple participatory elements such as rhythm, sound and response
Time for children and carers to reflect, ask questions and share ideas
This is not a formal music lesson or performance. Instead, the focus is on cultural exploration, listening and shared experience, creating an open and welcoming environment for families to engage with music in a relaxed way.
Who it’s for
Children aged approximately 5–10 and their carers
Families interested in culture, music and storytelling
Suitable for mixed ages and abilities
No prior musical knowledge is needed. Children are free to engage through listening, imagination, movement or simple participation.
Why this session matters
Music is a powerful way for children to understand the world, connect with other cultures and develop empathy, curiosity and creativity. These sessions use storytelling and sound to introduce global musical traditions in an accessible and age-appropriate way, supporting early cultural awareness and shared learning between children and carers.
By focusing on listening, context and imagination rather than performance or instruction, the sessions offer a gentle way for families to engage with culture as part of everyday life.
