Robert Mitchell’s True Think to play Hidden Beach

Hidden Beach is thrilled to present one of British jazz’s most compelling voices, Robert Mitchell and True Think, performing on our Live Stage at The Oval. A Steinway artist since 2009 and professor at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Mitchell has forged a formidable reputation as a gifted pianist and composer whose work transcends traditional genre boundaries.

True Think represents Mitchell’s innovative vision of contemporary jazz – a multi-generational, multi-cultural reflection that blends electronic textures, jazz harmonies, R&B grooves, and folk influences into something entirely unique. Since his early days with pioneering band Panacea in the early 2000s, Mitchell has been organically eclectic, weaving together diverse elements of Black music with remarkable verve and sophistication.

As one of the most significant voices in British jazz, Mitchell’s approach to composition and performance is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant. His work with True Think showcases the full spectrum of his artistic vision, from intricate piano passages to expansive ensemble arrangements that push the boundaries of contemporary jazz.

The group’s performances are known for their dynamic range – moving seamlessly from intimate musical conversations to powerful collective statements. Mitchell’s masterful piano work serves as both the foundation and the launching pad for explorations that can be tender and introspective one moment, bold and challenging the next.

True Think features some of the UK’s finest musicians, each bringing their own distinctive voice to Mitchell’s compositions while maintaining the collective spirit that makes jazz such a powerful form of expression. The ensemble creates soundscapes that honour jazz traditions while fearlessly pushing into new territory.

What sets Mitchell apart is not just his technical brilliance at the piano, but his ability to create music that engages both heart and mind. His compositions for True Think reflect a deep understanding of jazz history while remaining firmly focused on its future possibilities.
